Overview

The history of SWS European chapter is young compared to the chapters in U.S. despite the fact that serious wetland research has been carried out in Europe for at least five decades. The Chapter was formed in 2005 with the first meeting held in Bangor, Wales in January 2006. In 2007, the European Chapter meeting was held in Trebon, Chech Republic and in 2008 the meeting took place in Kuressaare on the Estonian island of Saaremaa. In the 2009, the meeting was organized in Erkner near Berlin, Germany and in 2010 the meeting was held in Tramore, Ireland. The 6th meeting was held in Prague in July 2011.

SWS Europe is focused on understanding and advancing wetland science, as well as assuring that decision-making processes affecting wetlands are based on an understanding of wetland science. Carrying out this mission requires members who are informed about both the underlying science and the kinds of considerations that affect decision-making, many of which are specific to Europe and in particular the European Union.

The 7th SWS2012 European Chapter meeting will be held 17-21 June in Aarhus, Denmark, and will provide an opportunity to review and collaborate on advances in wetland science with focus on the European perspective.  The meeting will be a forum to discuss challenges and opportunities for sustainable restoration and management of wetlands in our changing world.
